Mentalization — what it means

The capacity to understand your own and others' behavior in terms of underlying mental states — feelings, beliefs, intentions. Personality disorders often involve narrow or unstable mentalization.

What it looks like

When you tell someone with strong mentalization "I'm withdrawn because I'm anxious about Monday," they hear: anxiety → withdrawal. When you tell someone with low mentalization the same thing, they hear: rejection of me.
