Comorbidity — what it means

When two or more diagnoses are present in the same person at the same time. In personality disorders this is the rule, not the exception — NPD often co-occurs with depression; BPD with PTSD; either with substance use.

What it looks like

A clinician might say your partner has "NPD with comorbid major depressive disorder." That doesn't mean one caused the other — it means both are real and both need treatment, often by different modalities.
