Pity play — what it means

Strategically deployed suffering — a sudden illness, financial ruin, traumatic backstory — used to extract sympathy, reset boundaries, or rewrite ongoing accountability.

What it looks like

Mid-argument about something they did, they tear up and tell you about a childhood incident you've never heard before. Your anger evaporates. The original issue dissolves. You're now comforting them. A month later the same incident comes up again at a different convenient moment.
