DSM-5 — what it means

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th ed. — the reference clinicians use for diagnosis.

What it looks like

When a therapist says someone meets "5 of 9 NPD criteria," they're checking the DSM-5's nine-item list (need for admiration, lack of empathy, sense of entitlement, and so on). This site uses the same criteria as a reflection — never as a diagnosis.
